日本留学アワーズ 芝浦工大、近畿大、一橋大大学院が初の大賞に
日本語学校の教師らが「生徒に勧めたい進学先」を選び、表彰する「日本留学アワーズ」の今年の大賞受賞校の発表と表彰式が８月３日、東京・代々木の国立オリンピック記念青少年総合センターで開かれた。私立大学理工系部門東日本地域で足利工業大学、同西日本地域で福井工業大学がそれぞれ昨年、5年連続で大賞に選ばれたことから選考の対象から外れて「殿堂」入りし、今年は私立大学理工系部門の東日本地域では芝浦工業大学、西日本地域では近畿大学がいずれも初の大賞を受賞した。
この他の大賞受賞校は以下の通り。専門学校部門の東日本地域は専門学校東京国際ビジネスカレッジ東京校▽同西日本地域は辻調理師専門学校▽私立大学文科系部門の東日本地域は東洋大学▽同西日本地域は関西学院大学▽国公立大学部門の東日本地域は横浜国立大学▽同西日本地域は大阪大学▽大学院部門の東日本地域は一橋大学▽同西日本地域は立命館大学。一ツ橋大学も初の大賞受賞だった。
日本留学アワーズは2012年にスタートし、今年で８回目。日本語教育振興協会（日振協）の日本語学校教育研究大会が母体となって開いている。日本語学校の教職員を対象に「勧めたい進学先」を選んでもらい、その結果を集計。各部門の東西の地域からそれぞれ5校を入賞校として選び、最終的に大賞を表彰式当日に発表する。
5年連続で大賞を受賞すると、「殿堂入り」し、別途表彰される。翌年から3年間、選考対象校から外れる。過去には2016年に日本電子専門学校が初めて「殿堂入り」し、2017年には早稲田大学が大学院部門で、昨年は足利工業大学と福井工業大学がそれぞれ殿堂入りした。
日本留学アワーズの取り組みでは、受賞校の紹介をはじめ、「勧めたい進学先」を選ぶにあっての日本語学校側の選考理由などを冊子としまとめ、毎年刊行。日本語学校にとっては進学後の学生の状況を知る機会が増え、一方、進学先の大学などは日本語学校の要望を聞くことが留学生の受け入れ体制の向上につながっているという。
東京福祉大学が留学生の大量失踪が大きな社会問題になった。留学生の環境の向上をめざす日本留学アワーズの取り組みに逆行するようなスキャンダルだが、アワーズの入賞校にノミネートされた学校は他の学校に比べて様々な優位性を持っていると言える。今年は以下の学校が各部門・地域で入賞に選ばれた。
